Symptoms of Diabetes, Is Your Child at Risk?

diabetes-1724617__340[1]

Seems like a crazy question, are you or your child at risk for diabetes? Why are we talking about diabetes, don’t we make olive oil? We do make seasoned olive oils, but our real passion is using those oils to help people live healthier lives. And diabetes prevention and care is one of those passions. One of our main questions we ask our students, “Do you get overwhelmed with all the confusing labels and weird names for ingredients?”

You’re not alone. We travel the U.S doing cooking classes and always hear the same concerns, “What is all the junk in the food?” If you can’t pronounce it you probably shouldn’t eat it! Well the AMA is trying to make life a little easier when it comes to our health and sugar.

outline of spoon and fork with sugar

The American Medical Association has adopted a policy to make consumers more aware of sugars that are being added to food by manufacturers and are urging the FDA to make the “front of pack warning labels” a priority for foods with high levels of added sugars.

The American Medical Association is also seeking the FDA put limits on the amount of added sugars that would be allowed in food that makes health claims or is promoting their food as having nutritional benefits.

This is great news for everyone who is fighting to not become a diabetic or who are already struggling with their blood sugar. November is National Diabetes Awareness month, most people have no idea how much of an epidemic diabetes is in the U.S

According to the CDC, “More than 100 million U.S. adults are now living with diabetes or prediabetes, according to a new report released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The report finds that as of 2015, 30.3 million Americans – 9.4 percent of the U.S. population –have diabetes. Another 84.1 million have prediabetes, a condition that if not treated often leads to type 2 diabetes within five years.”

9.4% is almost 10% of the Population of America! I had no idea but back when this study was done 2015, who knows what the stats are now. But back then Diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S

diabetes testing equipment

1 in 4 adults living with diabetes doesn’t even know they have it. “Diabetes is a serious disease that can often be managed through physical activity, diet, and the appropriate use of insulin and other medications to control blood sugar levels. People with diabetes are at increased risk of serious health complications including premature death, vision loss, heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and amputation of toes, feet, or legs.” -ADA

It’s so important the entire family is watching their sugar intake as we are seeing an extreme onset of adult diabetes now occurring in children. According to Mayo Clinic, it is important to manage your child’s diabetes as left untreated will have lasting health effects or possibly end up being life-threatening.

Do you or your child have the symptoms of diabetes? According to the American Diabetes Association, some symptoms may be mild at first and can go undetected.

Diabetes Symptoms

“The following symptoms of diabetes are typical. However, some people with type 2 diabetes have symptoms so mild that they go unnoticed.

Common symptoms of diabetes:

  • Urinating often
  • Feeling very thirsty
  • Feeling very hungry – even though you are eating
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Blurry vision
  • Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal
  • Weight loss – even though you are eating more (type 1)
  • Weight loss in Children is less common for (type2)
  • Tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands/feet (type 2)

Early detection and treatment of diabetes can decrease the risk of developing complications of diabetes.

little kid dressed like a doctor

Please help spread the word as diabetes caught early enough is reversible and small changes in your diet and exercise have seen the reverse of diabetes. Even losing 10-15 lbs if you are 200 lbs could reverse diabetes. Get tested today.

If going to your doctor is inconvenient I have used a company called Life Line screenings they come to communities across the U.S and offer glucose testing right on site, a simple finger prick and you got your facts.

Let’s all help each other live longer healthier lives. One day at a time, One bite at a time

3 Recipes for leftover Rotisserie Chicken

I love leftover land, most of the people I know live between “I forgot my phone Avenue” and “Where are my keys Blvd.” We all seem to be in a rush now days, much more rushed than we use to be. That’ s why leftover land is so highly populated and growing 😉

plate of pita bread

So here are three time saving tips for leftover Rotisserie Chicken. Salads are healthy and fast but how about making a Fattoush salad and kick up the protein and crunch while you’re at it. Fattoush is also a great way to use up any flatbread or pita you have leftover.  It’s simply your favorite greens and veggies . Simply drizzle your favorite flavor of Canary Island Garlic Herb Olive Oils over the pita and toast, then when golden crumble up in salad and add cut up grilled chicken. Full recipe Bon Appetit

Italian chicken salad is a great way to use up your leftover chicken. Add chopped chicken into greens add a bit of roasted peppers and red onions a little slivered almonds and capers how about a little sliced basil for that little extra something. Add Canary Island Garlic Herb Olive Oil to all ingredients and mix together. Sounds good to me.

Speaking of Italian who doesn’t love a little gnocchi every once in awhile? Here is a great recipe for when you are in the mood for a bit of a cream sauce for those cold Michigan Summer nights 😉

Or my personal favorite chicken taco with Miriam’s famous chimichuri sauce sprinkled on top and a bit of Hot Splash as a finisher. oooh weee!!

Summer Grilling Tips

grilled shishkabob with tomato mushrooms and tofu

Summer is always better with good friends and good food! Miriam and I love to grill out while we are on our Summer tour. Walleye or Salmon or chicken on the grill, what’s not to love? Whether you use Gas or Charcoal remember to get that grill Hot so the meat and veggies sear when you pop them on there.  Pre-heat the grill for 15-20 minutes for best results. Always clean your grill to get any leftover chars off of there before adding new food.

Keep it Healthy

Steer clear of burning or charring your meats on the grill. According to research not cooking your meat till it burns will help protect against the potential risk of cancer. Also marinating your meat (try marinating is Hot Splash!!) as well as avoiding processed meat and cooking smaller portions to avoid prolonged cooking times, will help you help yourself 😉

grilling hamburgers

To avoid potential flare-ups of the flames when grilling, trim the fat off meats and take the skin off the chicken. By keeping the flames down you will reduce the risk of charring. If all else fails to keep a squirt bottle nearby to tame the flame.

Of course, don’t forget adding fruit and veggies to your BBQ, Miriam loves grilling pineapple and peaches to add to a big salad drizzled with Splash.  Now you got your greens you’re good to go!

grilling corn and zucchini and steak

So here’s to great grilling and enjoying the family and taking a little time to just kick back and relax. I think that’s what the Summer is supposed to be for right? 😉

3 Easy Ways to Lower Blood Pressure

heart-214014__340

A healthy way to start the weekend! We are all ready for the week to wrap it’s self up and send us off into weekend bliss. 😉 Okay so Miriam and I will be working on the weekend, but we do love seeing all our customers so I can always pretend… it’s a party!

We get lots of requests for healthy ways to live, we hear a lot of people wanting to get off blood pressure medicine and other drugs. So here is a real quick read and a few simple steps you can take today to help lower your blood pressure.

Now, remember we are not doctors and we don’t even play doctors on t.v.! 😉

Start here.

1.) Go for a good walk.

Instead of running errands on your lunch break. Strap on your walking shoes and head out for a brisk walk. If you are in an area that is not conducive to walking, do what my Mom does on rainy and snowy days. Run over to your local grocery store and take a 30-minute walk around the outside of the aisles. Just steer clear of the Twinkie aisle.

Hypertensive patients have been able to lower their blood pressure because the exercise helps the heart use oxygen better so it doesn’t have to do so much work when it’s pumping blood to all the important parts! Shoot for 30 minutes a day slowly increasing speed and time so you are always giving yourself a challenge.

2.) Relax with a bit of Jingle Jangle

Use music to relax and bring down your blood pressure naturally. According to research done at the University of Florence in Italy, the right music can lower your blood pressure. Listening to soothing bossa nova, classical or Indian music for 30 minutes while doing deep breathing lowered systolic readings by 3.2 points and after another month the reading had further improved by lowering 4.4 points.

Truth be known I’m listening to a little Bossa Nova right now.

3.) Be Salt Savvy

We hear a lot of customers tell us, it is important to have salt, it’s no good to go totally salt-free. Her’es the deal McNeal. You can never go 100% salt-free.

Here’s why.

Everything you eat when you eat premade or eat out, it’s already chock full of salt and “fake salt” (that’s a whole nother topic) So there is no way you won’t get “enough” salt. When you eat out you can get up to 3,000mg of sodium. And, “Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.”…err I mean yes, high blood pressure is related to sodium intake.

There are people that are more sensitive than others, elderly and African Americans and people with a history of hypertension in their families surely need to steer clear of salt. But, in reality, there isn’t a surefire way to tell who is and who isn’t sensitive to sodium intake… so let’s all be on the safe side… and cut that out 🙂

So shoot for below 1,500mg a day if you really would like to truly lower your blood pressure. How do you do that? Well… I hate to break the news to you it’s a very difficult and a long and tedious process that only professionals can help you with…

Are you ready for the news?

You have to start cooking at home. See, that wasn’t too bad. Much less traumatizing than all the doctors visits poking and prodding and gulping handfuls of pills and potions. Simply pop a little Splash in the pan with a little zucchini, onion, tomato, eggplant if you like and add a little chicken, saute and pour everybody over a nice organic salad.

Drizzle a little Splash (Canary Island Garlic Herb Olive Oil) over your greens a dab of Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar and a drizzle of Honey. Hallelujah! THat’s some kinda good eating and the sodium won’t leave you feeling like you ate a salt lick for lunch.

Here’s the even gooder news! 😉 Canary Island Garlic Herb Olive Oil has only 15mg of sodium per serving (almost a tablespoon is the serving) and even better… drum roll please… 10mg of sodium is considered salt free… so 15mg is lip-smacking heart healing good!

Hope you like the tips, Let me know what health info would help you the mostest.

Curious Food Facts: Tomatoes were once considered poisonous and avoided like the plague. No one dared touch them until a famine hit and everyone was forced to eat them…and survived! I use to feel the same way about Brussel sprouts! But now I love them sauteed in Lime Canary Island Garlic Herb Olive Oil…delish

Did you know: A vegetable is defined as coming from edible parts of plants, like root, stems, stalks, and leaves. A fruit is from the ovary of the flower of the plant. So… that means peas, cucumbers, olives, eggplant, pepper, pumpkin, zucchini, and avocado are fruit!

Here’s a great FRUIT PIZZA Recipe!

B.) slice the eggplant into strips and lay on top of pizza

C.) Drizzle some Lime Canary Island Garlic Herb Olive Oil over the top

3 Health Reasons to buy Grass Fed beef at Aldi and #Grassfedbeef Recipe

20170301_133434

Grass fed beef from ALDI in Winter Haven Florida we will cook it in Canary Island Garlic Herb Olive Oil from http://www.vigoacuisine.com

Grass Fed beef is all the rage now with everyone becoming more aware of all the chemicals in the food. More and more we speak to people that are sick and tired, literally, of all the junk crammed into their food.

During our seminars we often have a segment for questions and we often hear about “the old days” and how Grandparents ate like a horse but lived until they were 102. We often thought it was because they also worked like a horse. Then we figured it was all the crazy GMO, genetic engineering of the food that was the difference.

Or maybe Grandma lived longer because she didn’t use Round up on her garden and didn’t drown her asparagus in DDT. We it all adds up.

Miriam: I am a big advocate of Grass Fed beef and yogurt and cheese. I don’t eat dairy much anymore but when I do I always try to make it grass fed. If you start reading all the ingredients in traditional yogurt and milk you will see that it’s chemicalized like crazy.

Kristi: That is why it is so exciting what ALDI is doing. They are committed to adding more and more organic and grass fed food to their stores. I noticed the other day you were buying Organic eggs at ALDI and now this big roast. The roast was lip smacking by the way!

Miriam: It was so easy to cook it was silly. We will give the recipe after we give the 3 Health Reasons to Buy Grass Fed Beef. How does that sound?

Kristi: Sounds Great. So lets get right to it! Here are 3 Fantastic Health Reasons that may have been part of why Grandma and Grandpa lived so long! They were letting the cows eat grass and the chickens eat bugs and grass and other goodies from the farm.

1.) Grass Fed Beef is lower in Bad Fat and Higher in Good Fat. Also Grass Fed beef is lower in calories than traditional feedlot beef. Grass Fed beef is lower in the Omega-6 fatty acids (linked to inflammation) and higher in Omega-3 fatty acids (linked to healthy hearts)

People with a higher content of Omega-3 in their blood have a 50% less chance of heart attack and since Omega-3 is good for every cell in the body it’s great for helping prevent depression and Alzheimer disease.

2.)Grass Fed Beef has higher levels of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) than feedlot beef. CLA is a super human defense against cancer. A study in Finland showed women with higher levels of CLA in their blood had a 60% lower risk of breast cancer.  Researchers from Utah State University go as far as to say you may lower your overall risk for cancer by eating grassfed products like, cheese, milk and grassfed beef.

3.) The Granddaddy of them all. Vitamin E. Grass Fed beef is four times higher in vitamin E than feedlot beef. Vitamin E is super healthy for the heart to lower heart disease and also great protector against caner. And a Bonus of all Bonuses…. Vitamin E is a great Anti Aging vitamin that the majority of Americans are deficient in.

The information for this article was gathered from a much larger article by www.EatWild.com  a fantastic well researched and  in depth article listing many more health benefits of grass fed beef and pastured chickens.

Miriam: There are so many reasons to eat Grass Fed beef but these three are a great starter reason to go down to Aldi and grab your beef. They have it on sale this week (March 1) for 5.99 a pound and it’s a new item so be sure to buy it so they keep bringing it in.

Kristi: Well I tell you the portion you gave me was outrageously tender and the flavor was over the Mooooon! Oh yeah you were giving them the recipe remember.

Miriam: This is one of the easiest recipes for making a roast. I love the crockpot and this is so perfect to have cooking while you are perking around the house. I usually put it in the crockpot in the morning and before lunch it’s ready and so delicious.

Kristi: Well I sure ate my portion and was eyeballing yours!

Miriam: Here is the Easiest Grass Fed Beef Crockpot Recipe Ever.

1 lb Grass Fed Beef

2 oz Canary Island Garlic Herb Olive Oil (I used the Hot Splash)

1 oz low sodium tamari (the grey label from San J)

A.)Add Splash and Tamari to meat in a ziploc bag and massage in for 10 seconds.

Now this is the Wonderful part. Most recipes call for marinating overnight or several hours at least. But literally you only marinate this as long as it takes you to get out the crockpot and set up where you want to cook it and plug it in. That’s it.

B.) Put the meat along with the juice in the ziploc and the marinade in the bottom of the crockpot and turn it on high for 4 hours.

VERY IMPORTANT: Check the meat after 3 hours. As crockpots all vary in heat regulation if you like it a little more on the pink side you will want to check at the 3 hour point if not a bit sooner.

Kristi: That is so crazy. I would totally have thought that you would have to add liquid to the crockpot. That method is super duper easy and no mess. Even better!!

Miriam: Yes and ALDI grass fed beef is so lean there isn’t a lot of shrinkage so you put in a pound of meat you almost get a pound when it’s done. Let us know how you like the recipe and be sure and share and leave us a comment so we can hear what other recipes you would like.

20170302_160131

Kristi:I served mine with Quinoa and organic baby greens a bit of zucchini and organic tomato and a little dab of Celtic Sea Salt.  When I add salt to my meal I always say put the salt on your meal, not in your recipes. So the Celtic Sea Salt is very healthy unprocessed and a couple of grinds is just perfect.

Kristi/Miriam: Thanks for spending a little time with us. We appreciate you. And remember we are always doing Art and Craft Shows across the U.S teaching people how to cook healthy meals using our simple Shake, Splash & Eat! method. So be sure to see where we are next we may be in an area near you. Leave your questions in the comments.

The Power of Prayer and Weight Loss

Miriam: Hi Kristi it’s a bit rainy today in Winter Haven, but nothing better than a rainy afternoon for hot tea and writing. I’m having some hot green tea, what are you drinking?

Kristi: I am having a little Yerba Mate. I like the green variety instead of the smoked variety.

Miriam: I love Yerba Mate. Jennifer, a girl who helped us at the Cafe off and on over the years, introduced me to it. It’s not as strong as green tea as far as the flavor goes, but has really great antioxidant properties.

Here is the one I am drinking right now.

Kristi: I love that you can brew in the morning and then ice it later in the day and not really lose any flavor. It is also considered a Thermogenic. Meaning it helps with weightloss by heating you body up slightly to burn calories.

Miriam: It also has a bit of a kick to it as far as invigorating but not like caffeine. You don’t get the drop after drinking like you do with coffee sometimes.

Kristi   I am listening to the best music right now as we talk very soothing. Here is the link if you would like to listen. It’s the sound track from the movie The Reader, super duper good music for focusing.

Miriam:I will have to check that out.I love the title to today’s Blog. We have been talking a lot about the power of Prayer as of late. Prayer is the Universal Unify-er, it doesn’t matter your upbringing there is a stillness and a closeness when in Prayer that is accomplished at no other time.

Kristi: I know for me I feel like Prayer is a constant communion an ongoing conversation that elevates the mind and spirit. I know people might find it silly to equate Prayer and Weightloss but I really think it is an overlooked powerful tool to be used every day for our well being.

Miriam: I like that, a Constant Communion, it really is isn’t it. I know everyday I Pray for guidance in business matters and personal matters. I ask for Wisdom and Guidance and I am never disappointed. How does Prayer work for you in the weightloss arena?

Kristi: I feel that Prayer has helped in being more aware. Slowing down a moment to have a Conversation with God about getting healthy and changing habits. It’s that momentary Pause that Moment of silence to ask for assistance. Whether you are driving by a drive thru that has suddenly started screaming your name, or the BOGO donuts left in a big pile next to the fruit and veggie section.

Miriam: The calmness is what I hear you saying. That moment you pause to ask for Help or assistance or Guidance, gives you that breathing room to take the couple of steps to walk past the donuts or drive pass the drive thru.

Kristi: Yes. When you are in the throws of a “crazy come calling” food choice, it is that Pause for Prayer, that has carried me through. When I focus on what I do want, like health and well being and vibrancy and energy, it’s like everything I don’t want just falls away. It’s when I obsess on what I don’t want, that I get more of what I don’t want.

Miriam: I remember you would tell me no matter if you went to the gym every day and weighed every day you would gain weight. It was the fact you were so focused on what you didn’t want that you forgot to focus on what you did want.

Kristi: Yep. I needed a sign like we had at Cafe Latte to point me to the Good Things I wanted instead of constantly running from the “bad stuff”.

cafe latte delicious sign

Delicious Sign in front of our restaurant of 20 years, Cafe Latte Coffee House and Eatery in Winter Haven Florida. http://www.vigoacuisine.com

You know that’s something I have changed in my thinking too. I don’t look at food as Bad stuff anymore. If I eat something I use to think of as Bad I would beat myself up about it till I was so down on myself I would just keep eating myself into oblivion.

Miriam: Yes it’s like the moment of pleasure from eating is consumed with the hours of hating yourself for doing it.

Kristi: Exactly. It’s a matter of not judging yourself or the food. That has been a Huge Blessing. Changing that mindset was a Game Changer.

Miriam: I am really proud of you. Not just because you reached a goal of losing the weight you have tried to lose your whole life, but because you feel good about yourself and are sharing your story with other to help them too.

Kristi: Thank you. It’s like Maya Angelou said, “Won’t give nothing for my journey now.”

Miriam/Kristi: Thank you for joining us today and spending some time with us. If you feel this has been of value please share with your friends and followers.

Take good care,

Miriam and Kristi

You’re Not Fat you’re Swollen

As a follow up on the weightloss blog post. Miriam and I were discussing that many times we feel fat or people think we are fat but in reality we are just swollen.

I know it sounds like a joke, but it really is true. How often do your joints ache and pop around or feel like you can’t bend your fingers all the way down. How many times you eat out and can’t get your rings off the next day? Swollen joints or ankles aren’t just because we are all getting old.

In the book Grain Brain by Dr. David Perlmutter, http://www.drpermutter.com a board certified neurologist and author discovered the link to inflammation and sugar pikes. Consuming wheat, carbs and processed sugar as well as foods that turn to sugar, will spike your sugar. So not only you have to be aware of the salt in the foods that are premade but the sugar.

Dr. Christiane Northrup, http://www.drnorthrup.com said that when the sugar spikes it creates inflammation throughout your entire body. Even in your brain, continual inflammation in the brain will deteriorate the blood brain barrier making the brain susceptible to disease and infection. With the deterioration of the blood brain barrier because of inflammation the brain will shrink to make room for the inflammation. This will lead to nervous tremors and may eventually lead to dementia and Alzheimer’s.

So what can we eat?

wpid-wp-1400693574460.jpeg

Frittata with fresh veggies and Canary Island Garlic and Herb Olive Oil http://www.vigoacuisine.com

There are tons of goodies out there to be nibbled and savored just be aware of the bread and sugar. I think that’s a good place to start. Most “treats” are bread and or sugar. If you avoid these you knock down your sugar spikes with a hammer. Yes it is over simplified but we need start somewhere instead of always going to default of, “it’s got to be harder than that.”

A huge help is to cook at home. You will avoid the land mines of drive thrus and take out service which will help with your waistline and your salt and sugar. It is truly a blessing that we can regain our health in such simple ways and take back our power from the pharmaceutical companies.

Miriam: I always tell our students and customers, either you take control of your life or the pharmaceutical companies will. Once you jump on the pill bus it’s easier to add more and more and feel out of control not only over your body but your wallet too. It’s much cheaper to pay a little more for healthier food than to pay the Doctors to try and dig out all the unhealthy cheap food you ate.

Kristi: I have said before how my life has totally changed from allergy pills several times a day to anxiety pill to a heart pill to anti- inflammatory pills. I now take just vitamins, pretty huge change from somebody who at one time had a double ear infection, bronchitis, sinusitis oh and dry socket from getting all four wisdom teeth pulled. All at the same time! I would get such inflammation in my ears I ruptured my ear drums, twice.

Now that was a hell of a couple of weeks.

Kristi: Giving up wheat and bread is the first step for faster results also eliminate grains. I know for myself I tend to keep the weight off easier without grains and bread but the inflammation truly vanishes. As soon as I get back on grains and wheat my eyes start to pack suitcases underneath

Miriam: There is a saying that says the journey of a thousand miles starts with one step. It doesn’t have to be a thousand miles but you do need to start, start today to take back your health.

Kristi: Who knew that my Dad was always right when he would tell me, “Sis, you aren’t fat, your just swole up!” Ha ha Thanks Dad

Tremendously,

Miriam and Kristi
