As a follow up on the weightloss blog post. Miriam and I were discussing that many times we feel fat or people think we are fat but in reality we are just swollen.
I know it sounds like a joke, but it really is true. How often do your joints ache and pop around or feel like you can’t bend your fingers all the way down. How many times you eat out and can’t get your rings off the next day? Swollen joints or ankles aren’t just because we are all getting old.
In the book Grain Brain by Dr. David Perlmutter, http://www.drpermutter.com a board certified neurologist and author discovered the link to inflammation and sugar pikes. Consuming wheat, carbs and processed sugar as well as foods that turn to sugar, will spike your sugar. So not only you have to be aware of the salt in the foods that are premade but the sugar.
Dr. Christiane Northrup, http://www.drnorthrup.com said that when the sugar spikes it creates inflammation throughout your entire body. Even in your brain, continual inflammation in the brain will deteriorate the blood brain barrier making the brain susceptible to disease and infection. With the deterioration of the blood brain barrier because of inflammation the brain will shrink to make room for the inflammation. This will lead to nervous tremors and may eventually lead to dementia and Alzheimer’s.
So what can we eat?
There are tons of goodies out there to be nibbled and savored just be aware of the bread and sugar. I think that’s a good place to start. Most “treats” are bread and or sugar. If you avoid these you knock down your sugar spikes with a hammer. Yes it is over simplified but we need start somewhere instead of always going to default of, “it’s got to be harder than that.”
A huge help is to cook at home. You will avoid the land mines of drive thrus and take out service which will help with your waistline and your salt and sugar. It is truly a blessing that we can regain our health in such simple ways and take back our power from the pharmaceutical companies.
Miriam: I always tell our students and customers, either you take control of your life or the pharmaceutical companies will. Once you jump on the pill bus it’s easier to add more and more and feel out of control not only over your body but your wallet too. It’s much cheaper to pay a little more for healthier food than to pay the Doctors to try and dig out all the unhealthy cheap food you ate.
Kristi: I have said before how my life has totally changed from allergy pills several times a day to anxiety pill to a heart pill to anti- inflammatory pills. I now take just vitamins, pretty huge change from somebody who at one time had a double ear infection, bronchitis, sinusitis oh and dry socket from getting all four wisdom teeth pulled. All at the same time! I would get such inflammation in my ears I ruptured my ear drums, twice.
Now that was a hell of a couple of weeks.
Kristi: Giving up wheat and bread is the first step for faster results also eliminate grains. I know for myself I tend to keep the weight off easier without grains and bread but the inflammation truly vanishes. As soon as I get back on grains and wheat my eyes start to pack suitcases underneath
Miriam: There is a saying that says the journey of a thousand miles starts with one step. It doesn’t have to be a thousand miles but you do need to start, start today to take back your health.
Kristi: Who knew that my Dad was always right when he would tell me, “Sis, you aren’t fat, your just swole up!” Ha ha Thanks Dad
